Dr. Aseem Malhotra is a prominent British cardiologist and advocate for public health. He is known for his contributions to the field of cardiology and his emphasis on lifestyle interventions for preventing and managing chronic diseases. Dr. Malhotra has published several scientific papers and authored several bestselling books, including his most recent, A Statin-Free Life. Dr. Malhotra also has a new documentary coming out called First Do No Pharm.

What you'll learn from this episode:

  • Dr. Malhotra’s evidence-based approach to treating heart disease, and why he does not emphasize reducing cholesterol, or even worry about saturated fats.

  • The minimal benefits associated with taking statins, and the most common side effects, including fatigue and muscle pain, as well as rare, but more serious side effects.

  • Chronic stress increases chronic inflammatory markers in the blood, making it a risk factor for heart disease similar to smoking, type 2 diabetes, or high blood pressure. Stress management techniques such as spending more time hugging and practicing meditation can make a big difference, but you should also examine ways to reduce stress in your life.

  • Even mild hypertension (blood pressure over 140/90) increases the risk of stroke. However, lowering blood pressure with medication in mildly hypertensive individuals does not show a protective effect. Diet and meditation are powerful interventions for blood pressure management.

  • Why brisk walking 30 minutes daily is enough for most people, why salt is probably not raising your blood pressure (but ultra-processed carbohydrates might be) and which Mediterranean foods should be the cornerstones in a heart healthy diet.

  • And much more!
